The Alamo, San Antonio, TX

The Alamo (Alamo Mission San Antonio de Valero) was built by the Spanish Empire as a center for Roman Catholic missionary at the heart of San Antonio. The Alamo means cottonwood in Spanish. The name is probably taken after the grove of cottonwood surrounding the building at that time. The missionary was later abandoned by the Mexican army and the complex was turned into a fortress. The Texian Army fought them to gain control of the tower only then to be fought back by the Mexican Army in the infamous Battle of the Alamo. Following the battle, the Mexican army gain control of the fortress but was forced to forfeit it before the end of Texas Revolution. The building was then not constantly in used and properly conserved until late 1800s. Restoration of the building began after it was sold to the Texas legislature. The Alamo since then become an attraction to San Antonio, featuring a chapel and long barrack now turned into museums, fortified walls, courtyard, and cannons. There was once a cat roaming around the complex and protecting it from pests.
